Children and Youth in Care Day 2026 Brings Youth Voices to Queen’s Park

Nearly 40 youth, chaperones, and OACAS staff gathered at Queen’s Park on May 14 to mark Children and Youth in Care Day (CYICD). The event provided an opportunity for current and former youth in care to connect directly with Minister of Children, Community and Social Services, Michael Parsa, ministry representatives, and Members of Provincial Parliament. A key focus of discussion was the Ready, Set, Go (RSG) program, with youth sharing both their appreciation for the program and ideas for strengthening support for young people transitioning to adulthood.

“Throughout the planning process for CYICD, my excitement and anticipation for that day was raised after each meeting,” one youth said. “When the day finally came, I was both anxious and filled with joy. I felt that the voice of both my fellow RSG youth and my own was truly being heard and considered for a program that greatly impacts us all.”

This year’s theme, Rising in Strength and Story, reflected the message that youth are more than their experiences in care and highlighted their strength, resilience, and agency.

The day began with youth observing Question Period in the Legislative Assembly before members of the Youth Provincial Advisory Council (YPAC) met one-on-one with Minister Parsa. During the discussion, youth shared their experiences with the RSG program and discussed opportunities to enhance supports and services for young people leaving care.

Following the meeting, YPAC members joined the wider group of youth, chaperones, ministry representatives, and MPPs for a reception at Queen’s Park. The reception provided an opportunity for youth to continue conversations with elected officials and share perspectives on issues affecting children and youth across Ontario.

“I am very appreciative that Minister Parsa was attentive and showed compassion for all youth in care and RSG youth alike,” added the youth participant.

Children and Youth in Care Day continues to celebrate the strengths, stories, and achievements of current and former youth in care, while creating space for their voices to be heard and valued.
