In June 2006, 15 youth came together at the Ignite the Flame conference over three days and made a presentation on youth issues to the general assembly of the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies and the Children’s Mental Health Ontario joint conference. “The Youth Leaving Care Report validated youth in care’s recommendations and helped us create a call to action for Ontario CASs and the Ministry of Children and Youth Services. Youth would be watching and reporting on CASs and the Ministry’s progress,” said Adam Diamond and Amanda Rose, OACAS youth coordinators.
Youth involved in the presentation continued to meet and the Youth Policy Advisory and Advocacy Group was formed. YPAAG has hosted quarterly meetings, one day meetings, weekend focus groups and a weekend leadership retreat at Bark Lake Outdoor Leadership Centre. “Youth involved in YPAAG have an extreme level of commitment and have dedicated their time and efforts in working for change!” said Adam and Amanda.
YPAAG has been consulted by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities on the issue of youth in care pursuing post-secondary education. YPAAG also submitted their views and suggested amendments to the Justice Standing Committee on Bill 165 Independent Advocate’s Act. Most recently, YPAAG met to assess agency profiles that have been completed by Youth Champions from each agency.
Members of YPAAG as well as representatives of Ontario's Crown Wards presented what they feel are issues that still need to be addressed and what it will take to truly ensure that CASs, workers and the Ministry act like a “good parent” would at YouthCAN’s First Annual Conference Setting up for Survival Success on June 4.
